I found this coin and have not been able to find another coin like this. Underneath the Indian there appears to be either the letter R or P (or similar) - also the two sides are inverted to each other. Can anyone tell me anything about this coin please, and it does not appear to have a date.

Never seen one like it but it mimics a Civil War token(US) of around 1863 or 1864. Because coins were hoarded, businesses would make store tokens or patriotic issues to compensate. This may be authentic, but I have my doubts. It may be a copy, sold in battlefield tourist shops.

I was thinking that it may be a copy of a California Gold one dollar piece. At 15mm, it's plausible.

Think Spruett's on the right track there, the one on reverse gives it away. Obverse pix were always weird on the imitations.

Quote:
It is about 15mm circumference

That would be less than 5mm in diameter.
Is that correct?

Looks to me like an unplated (perhaps the plating removed at some point) copper copy of a Small Indian Head Gold Dollar (Type 2 - Indian Princess). Those were 15 mm in diameter. Several details are missing, perhaps in an attempt to get around counterfeiting laws, but the overall design is pretty similar. This is what the real deal looks like:
