What type of error would this be classified as? It odd it's like the dye splattered and on some areas it's seems as if the dye did not take. I'm lost please assist. Thank you!

@Jbedwell, it looks to me like the copper surface has toned unevenly over the years. This may be due to something (e.g. skin oils) providing protection from oxidation in some areas. It could also be an uneven application of tarnish or some other surface protectorant. It doesn't look like uneven alloying to me so it seems unlikely that this is a mint error. As an aside, there is no such thing as a "die" (in the sense of a colorant) on these coins.

Agree. Something may have partly overlain the coin in a drawer for many years, perhaps.

That's a nice looking coin. I don't mean the dis-colorization, I mean the condition.
I agree with the others, it's not any kind of mint error. Environmental conditions have affected it.

Even saliva on a coin will darken the coin. So it is not a mint error, just a contaminate that happened to the coin.

Quote: Even saliva on a coin will darken the coin. That reminds me of a post several months ago where a user commented that he could tell a Copper coin from a Zinc by tasting it. Don't lick the coins people!

All copper and silver coins will tone when exposed to the air or other sources of moisture.

As a side note, for future ref. Take your coins out of their case or holder (if you can) before taking the pictures. Also, pics of Obv. and Rev. would be helpful. Your coin looks in exceptional condition! Would like to see the rev.
