So I found this sight looking for answers about a penny. An 86 in really rough shape but that's not the odd part. Well I will upload and anyone interested can have a look and maybe clue me in. I can say that its not magnetic and it only weighs 2.4 grams. Just as a little side note,I started looking closer at the change I was receiving because in this town , mostly I'm getting old coins ( 20+yrs) for change at any given store. Yea I know, Rod Serling right ? Ok guys . hope I did that right. any ideas welcome. ]. *** Moved by Staff moved to a more appropriate forum. *** I'm wondering what the thing is made of? Not copper, Not steel...It looks like aluminum shining through but that's not possible is it ? Edited by knighttof7 01/09/2018 02:40 am

a Lincoln Memorial cent from 1986 would have weighed 2.5 grams went it left the mint. So 2.4 grams would be within tolerance.

Since it looks like we will be talking about this cent, I moved your thread to the section about US Modern Coins. Looks like this cent had been encased in a holder. The edges appear to have been ground down to fit in something like this.

Cents of that year were made by a core: 99.2% Zinc, .8% Copper - and plated: 100% Copper. You are seeing the zinc interior. Zinc reacts with air, so eventually that will destroy the cent where it will not be recognizable.

Quote: Cents of that year were made by a core: 99.2% Zinc, .8% Copper - and plated: 100% Copper. I thought they had a 100% zinc core with a 100% copper plating and the percentages were 97.5 zinc and 2.5 copper.

What you have there is a dryer cent. The edge is worn away from rolling in a dryer drum exposing the zinc.

And now you know it did not come from the Mint that way.
