Hello, I came across a 1970S nickel that looked a little off to me. So I compared to another 70S and what do you know the mint marks are in different locations. The letters for both coins (IN GOD WE TRUST and LiBERTY) are equally distant from the rim, so it makes me think its not an offset punch. The only part of the coin misplaced is the "S". I couldnt find anything on google regarding this so I figure I should turn to the pros... Any ideas what this might be? New member here, so forgive me if I have terminology wrong etc. Thanks!

Good question. The S was punched into the die by hand. So each die will have the S in a slightly different place. We look forward to more of your participation.

The mint was still punching the MM by hand in the 80's - actually that S can be all over the place depending on which bar the employee went to at lunch time!

to CCF. Mint marks were added by hand to each working die until 1990. Starting in 1990 the MM was added to the master die during the engraving process. So prior to 1990 the MM can vary a bit. Your coin is not "off" enough to be collectable. John1

Keep it if you like it, but no premium value. Keep hunting. There are error coins and die varieties out there waiting to be found.

Compare the mint mark to others. I found 2 1970 S nickels that had the wrong mint mark. The mark used is supposed to be short and fat but I found 2 that are tall and skinny.

With them hand punched several times, it could all be from the same punch, but the depth can be different and make them look different. Wider/taller, but if they are all the same style mint mark punch, they are normal. Some years multiple punches in the past. (1946) But if they are the same style of mint design, and they look different, that is just normal.

As long as it was below the 0, to the left of the rim, and to the right of the bust, and not touching any of them, it was in the right place.
