So after physical therapy this am I stopped at Dollar General to grab a few things. My change was .90 cents. I got home and as I was putting the quarters in my jar I was like, yep I really miss these spaghetti haired State Quarters. I think it added a level of prestige to them. I dislike the hair on the ATB Quarters. Not much detail and kinda mushy looking. I think the hair should have been left alone.

Classic head in high relief is better than the spaghetti hair.

Spaghetti hair is better than the classic head in low relief.
Rest in Peace

I like the 1995 spaghetti hair but not the '96, '97, and '98.

I am not surprised that you know them well enough to be able to say that.

There's really a pretty big change between '95 and '96. They had slowly "enhanced" the hair detail since 1991 but then in '96 further enhancement was muted but they reversed the concavity of the coin. Where before the reverse was "concave" it '96 it became the obverse. It was '96 when people started complaining about "spaghetti hair". It just doesn't look right.

The states coins have a little better "balance".

Small changes in the design were coming faster and faster back before the states coins and rather than occurring every several years as in the past there were larger changes every year.

I still watch these '90's era coins hoping to find mules. These are coins struck with the wrong reverse die. In the modern era I believe these are made at the beginning of the year when the obverse die is swapped out for the new date and then they forget to change the reverse die. Unfortunately, reverse design changes were minor in this era so mules would be hard to spot if they exist.

The '96 is just an ugly date to me. The '97 and '98 are a little better but still "spaghetti" as are later quarters.

Excellent information.

I need to take a really close look at my quarters to see if I notice what you are describing.
