I'm leaning towards PMD. There seems to be a scratch going through the area of the date and down to the rim. Looks like some of the rim was damaged.

I seen that but it looked like it was well above the area so I didn't think it would effect that area. You can't see with the lighting but there is a tremendous amount of substance on that area.

Think of it this way. Even if it were a Grease Fill missing the last number, in that condition it's only worth a cent.

This poor guy has seen a lot of use in the last 60 years or so. I agree with @USSID18 that it looks more like PMD than a grease-filled die and I agree with @moxking that the value is pretty close to face.

That's true. I'm also in to collect though. So if it were a Grease Filled Die then I would still find it cool enough to add to the collection. PMD, well, you know.

It might have been a very thin lamination, coin damage or who knows being out there all those years. Hard to tell now.

I color adjusted and enhanced your photo. It's a 1951-D.

The last "1" seems fairly well outlined, but obviously weak. Interesting that the "L" in "LIBERTY" diametrically across the coin also seems a bit weak. I'd like to see a photo of the reverse.

Agree with the upthread posts, I'm leaning more toward a lamination, followed by a lifetime of circulation abuse.

It maybe a thinned planchet. The weak reverse tells me this might be the issue with your coin. If so, then it should be under weight?

@coop It's weighing at 3.11 on the dot. Just weighed it. I'm stumped.

I'd keep it safe for now. It might have been squashed on that side of the coin. Lets see an image of the edge of the coin. If the edge looks dimpled, then it may have been altered?

@coop, it was hard to get good pictures of the edge but I believe these may suffice. I spun the coins 4 times to get all sides of the coin.

Well it is still a Wheat cent. I'd toss it into that container.
