I can't exactly say how often I add a reply to a grading thread and that's the final reply. Many times I add some information or comments that I'm hoping illicit a response from the OP (original poster) but the thread just dies. I realize that that response to me might be negative and that's fine by me. It's my hope that we can generate some discussion (and perhaps a little controversy) on occasion.
Look, I swear, I put deodorant on today. You don't have to stay away!

Hi, Prethen. Most of what I have seen you post to has been on coin types that I have little experience on. Because of this I listen and try to learn. I appreciate your input.

It depends.
When you've offered your grading opinion on a 2 or 3 cent piece, I tend to feel like there's not much more to say. If I've posted before you and you agree with my grade, I'm delighted. If you disagree, I try to learn from the experience.
Other series, not so much.

Bruce ... I thought that was my legacy ... one and out! I am really getting paranoid about this, too, and find myself "not responding" just to get more thoughts on particular coin. I often wonder if others perceive me as arrogant or out in left field. Sometimes feedback is needed to set things right. So here's your feedback: You are the king of two- and three-cent pieces here and your grading and variety attributions are spot-on ... I am no expert with these and I won't even hazard a guess if you've already posted. This is a good thing for the community and your input is definitely needed. keep up the good work.  |

I think it is more a numbers game, rather than anyone being annoyed or offended by a post you give. Take a look at the first page of this grading forum topic page. Only 5 or 6 of all the threads there reach 10 or more posts. Folks post a coin to grade and yet only a few people respond with a grade. Some of the lack of response might be lack of expertise (there are some coin types I'm good at grading and some I stink), some of it might be time (I don't have time to look at each coin and offer a grade), some of it might be sheer lack of interest.
I personally would like to see a lot more opinions on grading of coins in this entire forum than there is for each coin. It would be nice to see the range of people's opinions and more than just saying AU50- why do you think a coin deserves your AU50 grade and not XF40 or AU58/MS60?

Prethen, SeatedNut- You both always give excellent grading input and I never perceive either of you as arrogant or out in left field  Your grading is always spot-on with definite conservative tendencies which is not a bad thing. I think alot of people around here are only comfortable grading what they are familiar with if they are even comfortable giving a grade at all. I certainly have a tendency to go with what I am comfortable grading but I will stray from that occasionally. On another note about grading however, I usually will not hazard a guess as to grade if the pictures are less than ideal which unfortunately happens quite a bit too. |

Hmmmmmm........a quick scroll down the page shows Prethen with 5 final replies, I am about to reach 6!  Prethen, I think your knowledge in the 2 and 3 cent world is such that your comments are usually spot on and leave not much to add. Nothing wrong with that, it makes this community much stronger and I have learned a ton about an area I had very little knowledge in.  Now if I can only figure out why I've been killing them...... |

Prethen...you are a victim of your own success and expertise. Once you've spoken, it's hard for us "lesser lights" to argue with you or add anything. It's like SuperDave on Morgan VAM's or coin photography. You're the forum expert on certain series. Enjoy your fame and notoriety. Edited by hunter20ga

I guess my "concern" is that I'm curious as to what thoughts the OP has as to what I've said, especially when I've done more than just spell out a grade. Sometimes, I've been off my rocker and plain wrong. I'll admit it. Sometimes, I'll say something that really eggs on a response but none occurs.

I think it's mostly because not too many people reply here, especially for more 'type' coins

My 2 cents worth, I try to view all the coins for grading. The ones I'm not too familiar with ( the overwhelming majority), I try to gather as much as I can from other peoples posts as to WHY they graded that particular coin that way. Sometimes I'll hazard a guess based pretty much soley on eye apeal. Sometimes I guess just because I LIKE that particular coin. ( ie CC anything!) Mainly, I look at the coins, and try to learn as much as I can, and post a few for grading every now and then. I'd post more, but my photography skills suck! But thanks to SuperDave and all you other great forum members, I'm learning tons faster than ever, both about coins, and photography. Don't ever stop posting! And I'll keep lookin and learnin! |

I try to follow-up my grading requests with my grade. Normally, the thread dies there. I really don't mind if someone comments after with their thoughts, in fact, I enjoy reading ANY comments, positive or negative. I'm often surprized by some detail I may have missed. I'm thankful for any response since I took the time to take pictures and post. It's always fun sharing your collection with others that appreciate it. I've shown my collection to many friends and family members....they just don't care that much. LOL I mean, take my complete Lincoln collection, most people just flip through the pages in about 5 minutes and say it's nice. Any of the Lincoln nuts on this forum would probably be looking for at least an hour. I'm just happy I have a place to share with people that are actually interested. |

I have no problem discussing your views on a particular coin but in case you did not know I only really fixate on one particular type coin and if the truth be know varieties of one particular date. When offerings of this series happen to appear on the grading section I am more than happy to add my comments even if they disagree with yours. Trouble is its usually me putting up the pics soliciting comments. I try to look at the grading section on a regular basis but I just don't feel confident in my knowledge to comment on most coins there.
Even the series I collect I am still very much a novice only having been at it a decade or so.
I welcome your comment on anything I post even if its the final reply to the thread. I'm with BadThad on this. If I take the time to post some pics even if they are not the worlds best then its nice to get at least one reply.
