The one thing I know about Trade dollars is that they are commonly counterfeited. For that reason, they are an excellent candidate for buying slabbed. With that said, your coin is either genuine or a very good fake. It does appear, however, to have been cleaned - most apparent on the left obverse field.

Thanks Aoraki, I have been reading up on all the fakes. I didn't realize how many and how bad it is. I bought several other coins off ebay and now I am worried about them. I did buy from reputable sellers but that might not mean much. I didn't realize it been cleaned till yesterday when I looked at it. So it definitely is?

to the forums! Think you're lucky, beginners I guess, lol! It does appear to be legit, but as said, HARSHLY cleaned. To a lot of coin purists that's a killer. As a grade, XF50, details, hardly cleaned. Maybe sliding up to a AU53, but no higher, too much wear. It does have nice enough detail, do hope its real. Not magnetic and correct weight? That there will tell you much. Good luck with the rest, but do put up the sellers pix here before you get took in the future, OK? Beside, we like pix!

MoxKing, why do you say it's fake. I feel like crap now. I looked up a PCGS coin and compared and I cannot see any difference.

I honestly cannot tell if it's fake or not, and I will wait for the experts to chime in. Quote: Fake. Look at Liberties Feet and Hands. A PCGS photo shows little difference between the OP's coin and a legit one.

Here's my fake, see what you think. Mine is "mushy" From the files HERE at CCF: I see NO difference in this one and OP's coin. The hands (both) are same, ngle of toes, same and the feathers are an exact match in consistency and shape. The MM seems correct but ai have no example to compare placement/shape to deterine a die pair. The stars are complete and formed correctly. If this (OP) coin is a fake it is a VERY good one. Need weight and magnetic fail to be sure.

In the PCGS photo I'm looking at, the smaller MS67 specimen shown here, the extended hand holding the branch has 4 distinct fingers. The OP's coin has 3, and there is a clear break between the branch and the thumb. The lines between the toes also look more distinct in the OP's coin than the PCGS one. I'm not an expert and each of these pics is not zoomed in far enough to see the differences clearly. But as noted, Trade dollars are commonly counterfeit -- some much more obviously than others. If in doubt, send it to a TPG for authentication.

Sure looks real to me. I went to PCGS photo grade and saw no differences at all.

It looks real to me and the weight of an 1878 S Trade dollar should be 27.2 grams.
