I recently discovered this LMC in a roll I was searching and it has to be the most beautiful, yet extraordinarily ugly example of a penny I have ever found!

Looks like Abe came down with a severe case of the measles, lol.

Can anyone tell me if this is a plating issue, an alloy mix issue or something else?

Thanks.

Usually, I see Zincolns with only a few zinc gas bubbles, but that is what it appears to be wrong over the entire coin. Wow

This is an plating issue. It is caused when contaminants get into the plating solution. It reminds me of the Chicken Pox.

Zinc is a highly reactive metal, to organic substances, water air, dust. The zinc blank was most likely still moist when entering the plating process, under those bubbles are released gasses and expanded corrosive dust.

I would put that in a 2x2 and keep it. I have a few like that that I kept, because they were a higher grade and looked cool.

Take a few photos as they age to see if the corrosion pops through the plating.

Yeah, I figured that is what it was. I've just never seen plating issues so extensive before.

Just wondering.....what would PCGS do if I submitted this coin for encapsulation?

Probably send it back in a body bag with a LOL sticker on it, huh?

It's truly a beautiful coin if it weren't for those slightly distracting bubbles!

The proverbial "You can't see the forrest for the trees..." comes to mind, lol.

More of a zinc dust issue that din't get off before the plating was added to the planchet. Happened a lot on the new 80's zincolns.
