Hello everyone. I was looking through some change I got back from the store and happened across 2 diff State Quarters with possible errors on them. The first is the Harper's Ferry quarter on which I saw pretty easily with the naked eye a strange marking that very closely resembles the inside of a piece of corrugated cardboard. After taking a closer look with a loop I'm 99% convinced it happened during the minting process. It def is not caused by normal wear and tear from being used in circulation. It's aged/wore at the same rate as the rest of the quarter. I almost thought it was a die crack but the fact that it has somewhat of a pattern it leads me to believe it's not. But I guess anything is possible. The second is a Louisiana quarter with what looks to be a rpmm or dare I say double die. It only looks like it affected the mint mark which makes me thing rpmm. Any help or opinions are as always much appreciated. Thanks in advance

As to the RPM,not possible because the mint stopped hand punching them around 1990.

@WN83, first welcome to CCF. Second, I'm glad that you were able to post your pics.

For the Harper's Ferry quarter, I do see a regular pattern of scalloped dings in a line toward the right corner of the building. You can see where the metal has been displaced downward and is piled up above the field of the coin. While certainly odd-looking, that is most likely damage to the coin after it left the mint. In the past, we have attributed this type of damage to an impact with the rim ridges of another coin, such as a quarter. It is impossible to know exactly what caused this damage though.

The mark on the building is 100% PMD (Post Mint Damage). Not a mint error.
The mint mark looks like MD ( Machine Doubling).

The damage was probably caused by the edge of another coin, as others have said.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I was pretty sure it wasn't a rpmm because like you said I didn't think they did it anymore. I'm still pretty new to this. It was the only thing that I could compare it to. The reason I didn't think it was md was because I've seen a ton of md and it's hard to see in my pics but you when you look at it under more magnification there are what look like two mint marks but one is rotated a few degrees further than the other. Is there Machine Doubling where that happens? I couldnt find any examples of it. I understand the chatter and stuff but if the mint mark is part of the die how is that the only part that rotated a little bit? You would think that there would be signs of it on other parts of the coin. I've seen plenty of chatter and md on the new State Quarters but nothing like that. Not saying any of you are wrong, just looking to learn as much as I can. Thanks for your help on the matter everyone, much appreciated

After looking at it again compared to the regular P mint mark, is it possible the die broke at the mint mark and left off the back half of the P?

Well the mintmark is created by what is effectively a hole in the die. Not sure how to "break" the die and make the hole smaller.

As I stated earlier, the mintmark is MD for sure.
