Hello. I'm in Australia and I have inherited my dad's collection. I have no idea. There is US currency. Please can you tell me what to look for first? Any guidance is appreciated. Veronica

Veronica! You can start with the "Coin Facts" and " Coin History" sections here. Of course, pics are always welcome here. Most US coins have the denomination and year/mint mark on them, so it should be easy to look them up here. To determine value is a little trickier. You first have to give them a rough grade, then find a fair market value. The "Coin Facts" section has grading guidelines, and you can find current market values online at several places, such as Heritage coin auctions, numismedia, PCGS (Profesional Coin Grading Service" etc. Hope this helps!

Dolly, are you looking to sell it, have it appraised, get insurance for it, or what? I would look to see if there was any gold coins in it first. Then I would pick out the silver. Then, I would find all the coins that are in good shape and older than 1950 or so. Maybe first you ought to get a Red Book and look through it until you find what coins you have, document them, or take pictures of them. Don't take them to a dealer right away offering to sell them. Pick out the really nice ones, the ones with low mintages, and you might want to hang on to them.

And if you have more questions post them here. There are lots of helpful people and knowledgeable who can work through what you want to do with those coins. How many coins are we talking about? Are they just strays or are they in folders, or what?

Any way of getting picture by chance? If not then what are the dates and sizes as compared to current Aussie change to give us an idea of what you might have.

Are the coins in holders or are they loose?

If it's a very valuable collection - are you married? Just asking...

Dolly, you are a tease! You tell us you inherited a coin collection, then won't let us see them, or talk to us ever again. What kind of coin artist are you?

I'm sorry I was so insensitive, Dolly. I am just kidding around. I'm married with two kids. I was just curious as to why you would post a comment like that, about having a coin collection, and not return and say something, like "huh, good idea, or I don't think I want to do that." Seems kind of strange. But, like someone on these posts says, "Mountains got his own ways." I'm pretty new to collecting, so I'm making a lot of stupid mistakes along the way. Went to an auction the State Treasurer was putting on. Man, did I get burned there. It's very easy for more experienced, less reputable collectors to get you. But generally, everyone is pretty honest and nice, it's just when you think you're trying to get one over on them - that's when it's you who's really getting burned.

Post Pics !!........no one could grade and set a value on a coin they can't see.......
You can list the coins you have though....type, date, mintmark and we can tell you a decent amount about the particular coin and maybe the "range" as to what it might be worth.
So, if you can't post pics......then at least provide some more information as to what exactly you have and go from there.

Hey guys, give Dolly a chance to get her breath. She's busy posting in the Aussie forums. I have no doubt she'll have plenty pictures all in good time.

I think her Dad was very much aware of what coins were worth collecting based on some of the Aussie errors he had.

mfry, you cracked me up with your question,
