Every once in a while when selling ebay auctions, I'll get a notice of a bid retraction. Usually, there will be a note that says 'entered wrong amount' and usually, an astronomical bid where someone accidentally placed a comma instead of a decimal point. Well, as I was catching up on the emails I missed while the power was down (again!) from the latest New England storm, I got to a whole block of a couple of dozen bid retractions, all from one bidder! Just doing a quick bit of research, this is what is shows from the bidder: Quote: Items bid on: 987 Bid activity (%) with this seller: 0% Help Bid retractions: 675 Bid retractions (6 months): 740 It would appear that this buyer basically uses bid retractions as a way to see the secret maximums of other bidders, a quite dishonest practice. I am quite frankly shocked that 740 bid retractions on 987 bids didn't raise any flags in the ebay system... Long story shot, this guy is now on my blocked list, if ebay's not gonna stop em', I will!

As long as you can carry your gun into the bar, the bar doesn't mind a little gun play.

Care to share (maybe PM) the buyer name so that I can add them to my blocked list?

How does ebay let a person get away with retracting nearly 2/3 of their bids?

Bigsilver, PM sent... NSS, patience is the key word... Next time I'm on the phone with them, I'll add it to the list of things to mention... By the way, the numbers for this guy keep going up! Quote: Items bid on: 912 Bid activity (%) with this seller: 0% Help Bid retractions: 740 Bid retractions (6 months): 805

A very serious flipper. Knows when to bypass a worthless item to bid on, and concentrate on his "winners". Is it a "nice" thing to do, no, I wouldn't treat folks that way. But all in all, its business sales, a very brutal marketplace if you're in it to win, which apparently this buyer is. This really is a " no harm, no foul" violation of any "rules", so for ebay to restrict this potential buyer/seller will never happen no matter how much you may want it to happen. You did what you can do, individually restrict him. You took risks of this when you set the item in auction.

Unless he's working with vendors to maximize the bids on their goods, he doing this for 'recreation'. Do contact ebay and discuss this person, he needs to have his bid retractions refused and made to pay for his purchases. If the item is yours, send an empty envelope that he needs to sign for when delivered. He'll stop once he has to pony up.

Quote: This really is a " no harm, no foul" violation of any "rules" I completely disagree. When one of my clients, in good faith, puts in a bid, with a supposedly 'secret' maximum, and then this guy circumvents that by putting in bids and withdrawing them, in order to see what his competition is bidding, is not what I would call 'no harm, no foul'.

When a top bid is revealed, there is certainly harm done when a third bidder comes in and bids before the second bidder can retract his bid. The first bidder is now entirely out of the auction and the third bidder has used the bidding amounts exposed by the shiller.

JD, then bring it up with ebay, maybe they will change to block this behavior. I agree it isn't right or "ethical"(here we go again, got ate up before on that). I just can't see ebay willing restricting a potential revenue source, whether it be "right or wrong", unfortunately. There are other ways than ebay you know.

If ebay "allows" it, you can be sure someone will do it. Though totally immoral, and unethical, imo. That's why I never leave a max bid to be messed with, and only snipe.
