Over the past year or so, I have started to lose interest with my current sets. For my Lincoln set, although there are a few coins I wouldn't mind upgrading, these are all $300-$500 purchases and I am just not feeling it to spend that money on a single coin where my current example is pretty good overall. I am pretty happy with my 7070, Jefferson set and Roosevelt set (these are all my sets). So, I am thinking it might be time to start a new set! I really miss being able to spend $20 or $50 or the occasional $100 to get a coin needed for my set. So here are my thoughts on current candidates for new sets (I would pick one): Franklin halves - should I do uncirculated or circulated? Walking Liberty halves - VF level set Buffalo nickels - VF level set Indian cents - VF level set Morgan Date set - not sure on grade here Kinda have ruled out Ike's (sorry jbuck), Kennedy halves, Washington quarters or Mercury dimes at this point as well as older Liberty coins like Barber or Seated. Too new or too $$$. What can I expect to spend to put together a set of any of the above candidates? What are the key dates and what are they going to cost me? Should I look for a starter set and fill it out or start from the ground up? Any other considerations?

Franklins are the easiest set to complete on the list in uncirculated. All dates you can find with FBL with ease although a few are difficult 1949 S 1952 S, and the 1953 S FBL is almost impossible to find with FBL. That said they are a relatively short series, they aren't that expensive, and it is a underrated series IMO. That would be my choice. I actually am considering selling my graded set. I am just missing 1954D which was due to a error on my part. I will PM you.

I can only speak for the Franklin halves -- that would fit perfectly in your "$20 or $50 or the occasional $100" guideline, as long as you stay away from the proofs (the early ones are pricey). Even uncirculated ones aren't that expensive and the run is pretty short. I finished my set pretty quickly, with the exception of the aforementioned early proofs.

I have started a Liberty Walking half dollar set. I have focused on AU/Unc. for the common date coins and VG/F for the key and semi key dates. So far I think that it's a pretty good set, and I would recommend it along with Morgan dollars and a 20 cent piece set. I am almost completed my Morgan dollar date set Dansco 7171. It was easy to fill most of the dates, in AU or Unc., only the 1895 was $200.

Looks like based on ebay I could maybe do a circulated walker set for $800-1000, a circulated Franklin set for $300 or so and an uncirculated Franklin set for around $600 (I would do uncirculated based on the price difference for the Franklins).

Buffalo nickel $400 or so without the 18/17 overdate or 3 leg? But hate open slots and what do those run?

I'd do the Morgan dollar date set. It's my favorite Dansco album.

I do like the size and weight that the silver dollars have to them. You pick up one of those albums and you know you've got something. Plus I could probably work a Carson City or two in there. That's another goal since I have no CC's in my current collection.

Walking Liberty, with the majority purchased in decent shape as junk silver, is a fun set to chase.

Yes, I have only one CC in my Morgan dollar set, an 1890-CC. I'm planning to get a '91 or '92-CC, as both those holes are currently empty in the album. Definitely a fun set to complete, along with Liberty Walking half dollar.

I'm working on an uncirculated Franklin Set and think it is a very nice and attainable set. And love those nice, white silver Franklins in an album. I'm doing this one as "raws" in a CAPS album. Looks great! Another option which I am just starting is a Peace dollar Album. A fairly small series similar to the Franklin, and most are fairly attainable at reasonably good grades. I'm doing this one as a "certified" set. Michael

Of those, the Franklins have the most eye appeal to me personally. Gotta love Morgans, though, as they were my gateway to classic US coins.
