I happened to find this 1987 proof set in my backyard in a tree. Strange I know lol. They are extremely dirty. Who knows how long they have been there.
Wondering if there is any way possible to clean or restore them?

Graphic image warning!

Unfortunately you will never be able to restore the proof finish. They are corroded due to weather.
The 1987 proof set is not worth much even in pristine state.

Maybe if you plant them you can grow a money tree...

You could probably soak them in pure acetone, but they will probably never get back to a proof state. Wait for other opinions.

The easiest way to restore this set is to just sidestep the situation. Buy another identical proof set. Less financial outlay of cleaning materials and effort.

Whatever you do, don't leave the replacement set in a tree for any more than a few minutes !

Break these coins out and acetone them. Beyond that, little else can be done. If they turn out OK, include them in your collection; if not, dispose of them in a job lot.

Thanks all. That's pretty much what I figured. Aw well! I'll try the acetone thing as an experiment.

with Coinfrog. Spend them and buy another proof set. A 1987 proof set should not be expensive.

Or, plant them and grow a money tree.

You could try acetone as an expirement just for the heck of it, but I don't think it will help much.

I'm in the crack & spend camp and buy a nice set if you wish.

So that's another reason why proof coins are sometimes found in pocket change.

Crack and spend . I would take good care of that tree , it might give you a continuous supply of money . Just make sure you pick them before they rot .

I would just replace the set as well, but might soak them in
acetone just to see the end result for curiosity sake.
