@n234, an interesting concept, but I'm not totally on board (yet). Here is why: in order for there to be this progression of worsening strikethrough, whatever was interposed between the planchets and the die would need to be getting larger, or in the case of a group of smaller items, more particles would need to be added periodically to exactly the same area while the original grouping stayed still. I suppose such a series of events is possible, but it seems more likely that this is just PMD that happens to get worse and occur in some of the same areas (others, such as around the eye are only on some of the coins). I have blown up one region of interest below, but am not able to conclusively determine whether it is just PMD or evidence of a strikethrough. My leaning is toward the former though. I'll be interested to see what others think about this.

I would suggest that instead of a progression struck through a decreasing struck through would be the case as debris cleared from the die.

I was thinking that also. But I don't see any evidence of grease in those areas. If you have several more coins from that same die pair, we might know more?

Spence; As the die stamps the material what is between the punch/die would move slightly or radically.
Coop; I agree. I think that with each hit the die with grease picked up more "material".
Dennman; Whatever the progression less to worse or worse to less. I think this is a progression or decreasing.

Very nice finds and excellent progression set! Very interesting. Makes a great conversation piece in my opinion.
