Hi everyone, I recently purchased this coin from a store front coin shop, the seller insists the coin is authentic but I have had people tell me that its not.

It seems to be made out of genuine silver
It's 24.0 grams
The pocking on the fields does look like possible casting evidence to me - but the wear and the metal makes me think its not a modern replica?
Also this coin is pretty darn square - all of the photos of klippe's I have seen are not this square.
And finally, if this coin is a counterfeit - does it have any value beyond the silver content?

Thanks for your help!

Jesse

Mold separation mark along edge indicative of cast.

I do not believe the coin is real. Too square and as noted above, appears to have a seam along the edges. Surfaces in the field appear to be covered with casting bubble marks. Too light, should weigh in at close to 27 grams

"the seller insists the coin is authentic"

Because he's a schemer, or even worse... the poor chap is just clueless.

Cast for sure ... could be in the Sedwick listings at his site ... why check its modern and/or cast. Don't really see a casting gate but the surface field is unquestionably as described in this post.

I guess it had about $299 in value to both buyer and seller in this case, yes?

The piece may have "some" age to it (debatable, but really beyond the scope of this coin), but it certainly isn't anything close to a true "contemporary" (aka, of or very near that time). Essentially, it's another relatively modern fake.

As I now remember seeing this piece.... if you're going to try to be sharp on those BIN bargains, gotta know what you're doing. Your post basically listed the things that should be noticed - the key is to know all of that BEFORE you buy.

John L:
Clearly not the same design, but the exaggerated diamond reminds me of those similar types that have vexed you so. :-> Perhaps there's some connection to those; perhaps it's just a modern numismatic replica.

On the topic of those types, though... I believe I've mentioned that a post on another forum I saw some years back showed one of those other type and noted some family link to a pre 1910's hacienda. The more I look at these types, noting that story and seeing ones that have certainly been around for decades, I think that at least the early incarnations may have been made as a peso-sized "hacienda token" of sorts.

Hey thank you colonialjohn & everyone for your responses. I had a hunch the fields were not right. The coin dealer insists he has an x-ray machine and cast coins are not genuine silver, but that doesn't seem right to me... Knowing everything before you buy is a great plan, I will work on that one, but I've learned quite a bit about spotting real/fake klippe 8 reales and will keep looking for a real one! thanks again
