What does the little letters under the listings on Variety Vista mean? If you are a long time collector of doubled dies, you will realize that formula or description of the doubled dies show how they were listed. Until coppercoins came out with a numbering system in the mid 1990's, the dies were number with a set of letters-dashes-numbers. It was easy back then because all used this description. But when things changed, the number system was added instead of all the descriptions used in the past. To us today the number system works better for computer to sort information/attributions. So What do those little formula/description mean? Lets examine a few cent descriptions and see if I can help you with this? Cents: (I'm working with the 1964-D DDR and DDO for this discussion) 1964-D DDR-0011-R-II-C1964-D (Denver,) Doubled Die Reverse - die number 1Date/mint assumed 1= 1st die attributed, 'R' means reverse location on coin, 'II' means class 2, C means rotated clockwise.1964-D DDR-0022-R-II-C1964-D (Denver,) Doubled Die Reverse - die number 2Date/mint assumed 2= 2nd die attributed, 'R' means reverse location on coin, II means class 2, C means rotated clockwise.1964-D DDR-01212-R-II-C+V-CW from K-61964-D (Denver,) Doubled Die Reverse - die number 12 Date/mint assumed 12= 12th die attributed, 'R' means reverse location on coin, II means class 2, C means rotated clockwise + class 5 counter clockwise from 'K' means clock 6:00 (area of strongest spread)1964-D DDO-0011-O-V-CW from K-41964-D (Denver) Doubled Die Obverse - die number 1 Date/mint assumed 1= 1st die attributed - 'O' means obverse, 'V' Class 5, 'CW' rotated clockwise, from 'K' = Clock at 4:00 (area of the strongest spread.) 1964-D DDO-0033-O-V-CW from K-41964-D (Denver) Doubled Die Obverse - die number 3 Date/mint assumed 3= 3rd die attributed - 'O' means obverse, 'V' Class 5, 'CW' rotated clockwise, from 'K' = Clock at 4:00 (area of the strongest spread.) The biggest changes were the removal of the class designations. Along with the rotations and where the strongest spread were. The newer collectors don't care as much for this information. But back in the day it was the only way to list coins so you could match them up with what you find. Today with great images of doubled dies, images of markers and information that can be added to current sites make it easier to update than books or disks. Hope this helps. Although confusing to us now, that was state of the art in that time. Hope this helps. CoopHome formula descriptions Edited by coop 03/28/2018 7:33 pm
