This was another coin that I regret not bidding on today. It was sitting at about $27 with a short time to go til the end of the sale. It got bid up to $34 in the last few seconds and sold for that price. I thought it would go higher.

I think the coin grades at least XF40 and the 1833 Half Cent has a mintage of just 103,000, so it is a lower mintage year in a notoriously low mintage series. The problem that kept me from bidding is that the coin has a rim ding that flattened the coin on one side to a small degree. I think it is a details coin, but the other attributes of this coin are really enticing.

I really should have tried to snag this one :-(

Thoughts on grades?

I mean it has nice original surfaces but I think it's worse than a rim ding. It looks like it's been disfigured. Other places aside from the severe rim ding do not make a perfect circle. I think if you would have purchased it you would have been disappointed. I wouldn't be surprised if the coin was bent.

Is this coin really common with a mintage of 103k?

In this series of Half Cents - I think it is.... I agree that it is a low mintage series .... OR maybe there just aren't that many collectors of Half Cents. They are one of my favorites..... love those early coppers !

I think there was a hoard of 1833s discovered back in the 1930s. So, even though it is a relatively low mintage item, there are plenty of them around in good shape. Someone can wrap me on the hand if I'm off base.

Good pass. That dent is way more than a little ding. The coin is no longer circular.
