I went back to the bank I got a '66 Half Dollar from the other day and cleaned all the trays out of their $17 worth of coins. Found my first proof and first 90% silver half dollar!

The proof has some foggy stuff in the field that looks like it could be wiped away with a rag pretty easily. Will that lower the value of it? Also, I'm having a hard time telling if it is a type 1 or type 2 "S". If anyone could pipe in on what they think it would be much appreciated.

Don't do it! You'll introduce hairline scratches to the surface of the coin. Soak it in distilled water, then acetone if necessary. Allow to air dry.

Too late
I barely wiped part of the field and I can see little scratches in it. It also looks weird having one little part that looks more reflective than the other part. Lesson learned I guess. Should I just go ahead with doing a distilled water rinse?

Yes, but just keep the rag away. A cheap lesson to learn with a coin that you bought at face value.

Good Point Spence. I have heard about the danger of cleaning coins, but I never realized how serious it was. The more I search online about it I see that the fog on proof coins is common.

Well, it's a good thing you learned that lesson with a coin that's worth barely more than face value, if that.

Snatching silver and learning lessons. It can't get better than that.
