The 50's, 80's, and 90's all seem to be pretty notorious for overuse of dies

Nice pick-up @CM--we don't usually see them with cracks at all four corners.

Quote: Ok, does anybody know why the dies crack in these areas? Stress from the metal movement toward the obverse bust?

To form the bust design, it puts a lot of stress on both dies. But the Reverse design of the Memorial cents fail more often on the obverse. The shaping the stock material sometimes made them break usually on 1-3 corners, but this one all 4 corners. It kind of like trying to bend a cracker. (it can't be done) But as the die age, die polishing affect the thickness of the die face, then break down and you know...Crack.

Nice one! I was looking for one like that and found one with 7 cracks. I can't find it but I think it was a 1992
