Can anyone tell the approximate value of steel cent blank planchets and are they hard to come by.

I have been searching for one at the local coin show and have not seen one.

RedBook lists it at $25 but I'm not sure of the coins rates. Have you weighed it to make sure it's authentic?

Another source mentions 2.7 grams for 1943. (Steel planchet/Zinc plating) The 1944-1981 copper planchets were 3.11 grams. (Copper planchet)

Hi,

Zinc Plated steel planchets that we used for striking cents in 1943 as well as a coin for Belgium in 1944 keeps the price down on these.

There is really no way to tell if they were from our production of cents in 1943 or the production of the 2 Francs pieces used in the Allied Occupation of Belgium in 1944.

In any case, the weight you would want to verify is 2.70 grams.

Have Fun,Bill

There were two different standards used on the steel cents. One group was 2.5 grams the other was 2.7 grams, so either of those weights would be possible.

Conder101 is correct - one standard was used until May, the other from May through the end of the year. As pointed out before, 3.11 grams is not the correct weight for a steel cent planchet.
