I took this coin to a local coin shop and they wouldn't tell me anything other than it is a odd one and that I should keep a hold of it. so if anyone can help

Normal, bit of DDD, looks AU condition, is a Wheat cent worth keeping, nothing special tho

they guy at the coin shop said they was definitely something about the 5 and 8 in the date

to CCF. What you have is a worn out die issue. No error and no added value. The LCS you went to obviously has little to no knowledge of errors or varieties,so do not go there for this type of stuff. Instead post questions and photos here on CCF.

First welcome to CCF. Second, yes your coin shop guy was correct--there is something different about this part of the date. However, the point that we are making is that it isn't special enough to add numismatic value to your coin. You have a very nice condition Wheat cent, so it is good to see it in a 2x2, but it just isn't something that you will be able to retire on.

Do yourself a favor and cross that coin shop off your list unless you didn't speak with the owner about that coin . Maybe it was just an inexperienced employee .

There is something up with the 5 and 8, but it doesn't add any value to the coin. It's DDD.

Your coin shows Die Deterioration Doubling. It's a normal occurrence and not considered an error or variety. Generally, these are not even collected unless they're to an extreme level like this one:
