Im try to get a red memorial copper set from circulation. I want to hurry up and get as many reds I can before they disapear. It seems its getting harder and harder to find copper cents anymore. I did manage to get a nice red 1970s large date in change today. I would of really been happy if it was a sm date. I have been doing this for a while before but only to a certain date. So to date I have: 1959P&D 1960 lg date 1961P&D 1962D 1963 1964D 1968P&D 1970s 1974S

GOOD LUCK! Anything you find red in circ will likely be only MS63 and below. It's a lot harder than you think, I tried it at first too and gave up. The good thing....at coin shows you can find some nice ones super cheap....but it takes a LOT of searching.

Does finding red circulated coins from 1959 mean that someone is spending them currently from rolls or collections? It is hard to believe that a red cent from 1959 has survived in circulation for 5 decades.

rohumpy.... Quote: Does finding red circulated coins from 1959 mean that someone is spending them currently from rolls or collections? Well, if people are finding "proof" and "silver proof" quarters only a few years old, and silver .50cent pieces all the time, and occasional this and sometimes that. Yeah....not only possible, but likely ! Kids and teenagers getting ahold of rolls of pennies and other coins is sadly VERY common !!... ... .... ...

Speaking of finding this and that, someone paid me with a Mercury dime the other day. Needless to say it went right into my pocket.

i actually don't think it will be that hard, if you do a lot of roll-hunting... I only started in April, and I've got almost all of the '59-'98 album in nice original luster coins. I've actually been having the hardest time with the '83-'95 coins, since they don't seem to age well.

Back in the early '60's one cent pieces still acted mostly like coins; they circulated. There was tremendous collector interest in setting aside quantities of brand new coins for "future collectors" and even then a penny just wasn't a lot of money. This meant that they tended to sit for protracted periods in change jars and the like. As the decades have gone by this has changed. Pennies have represented negative wealth at least since the mid-1980's. They cost more to handle than they are worth. This means vast quantities are discarded or lost "accidently on purpose". These coins rarely make it very far from where they are released because they aren't used much and don't really circulate. All this means that old coins being added to circulation will remain red for years in some cases. At the same time there are frequent additions from twenty and thirty years old stashes that will also contain old cents in high grade. These uncirculated cents from before 1965 are still being spent though after all these years it should be slowing down now. With the price of copper so high many people would rather sit on 35 lbs of copper rather than get $50 from the bank, too. A set from circulation is a noble endeavor and should be possible to pursue until the denomination is removed from circulation.

1913-V you are a man after my own heart, I started doing the same exact thing about two months ago and now have ALL my LHM except my small dates and proofs. It can be done but there is a lot of searching. Most of mine are 50-MS63 (with a few nicer ones here and there) and when I find a nicer one I replace it. I did break down and buy the 82 set because I have the toughest time figuring out what is what and I got them for a good deal. There are some that will need to be replaced down the road but spending a penny now or a couple of bucks is a no brain-er.

'60 sm dt shouldn't be too tough but you won't find the '70.
I'll predict the toughest ones will be '77 to '94.

Have Fun doing it. Last year I started to build 13 sets from 1941 thru 2008 going thru bank boxs of coins. An lot wheat pennys I already had from saving them over the years. I started doing it since I bought serval incomplete 1909 thru 1940 books and wanted to update them to brand new folders and with 59 thru 2008 coins to make them worth more money to sell on ebay later since I finished my keeper set. Tough coins to find are pre 1940 coins, 68 thru 74 s mints, 1982 small date pennys. The rest is easy to find red nice pennys to install in folders. If you try it like I been doing. You need go thru maybe 50 to 150 dollars per week to get anywhere. I went thru over 1000 dollars worth so far in last year in my spare time. Dont try build one set and try to build serval sets at same time to make it your worthwhile. More trouble than it worth for one set. Try to buy an cheap 1909 thru 1958 Wheat penny folder on ebay and just update it. My collection of pennys had been geting giant over the last year. 13 sets of them in folders, 275 dollars face on 1959 thru 1981 junk copper rolls. 100 to 150 face on blazing red pennys from 1983 thru 2008 I been making solid date rolls out them for ebay or I may build 50 folders later. 35 dollars on 1982 pennys. One small box wheats so far. Good dates found were 1919d, 1919, 1909, 1917, 1927, 1927s, 1923s, 1924s, 1925s, 1930s, 1930d, 1890, 1907, 1920d, 1920s, 1925, 1991 messed up proof penny. One bank box full 1959 thru 1981 pennys that look nice where you can install in sets. One last thing dont toss your 1959 thru 1982 junk brown pennys . Save them since they will pay over face for them on ebay for copper scrap. I leave 1982 out of my copper boxs since it was an zinc and copper year. I put them in solid date rolls. Also find an dump bank with coin machices to turn them back into paper dollars. Its not worth rolling them up since retail stores hate them . My penny collection is geting so big and I geting tired of working on them so much. I am about to burn out on pennys and I need to take break from them big time. Have fun building you sets and hope you find an 1914d, 1931s or something cool. Chevrolet454ss

i broke down and started a 1982 collection. Now I gotta figure out what copper and whats not. I found four different really nice red cents plus a few extras. I found a 1982P&D sm date and 1982P&D lg date. I started getting disgusted with some of the coins though. You see a shiny coin showing excellent condition and all then you look at the reverse covered in vedigres. It makes me sick and just breaks my heart.
