sumismatic student, you are over thinking on this one. Perhaps the copper nickel is throwing you off. TPG did not indicate details.

it really doesn't matter what the TPG said. I grade the coin. I see clear pitting in the obverse fields.

It does very much matter what they grade the coiin. If you think you see pitting you need to study how to read pictures more

EF-40, color is a little iffy to Me but I think it could just be from handling (when it was still circulating). What was the composition of the 1859 IHC's?
