So I've wanted to own a decent Mexico Cap & Rays 8 Reale coin, but I'm having trouble figuring out value and whether or not I'm going to be getting a good value or not. I'm really looking for something around the $50 that may be circulated, but isn't cleaned. I found a couple on ebay and wanted your opinions.

This one looks OK but I'm thinking it might be cleaned. I don't want a cleaned one, but I'm having a hard time figuring out if this one is. One thing I noticed is that the date looks like an 1896 over an 1894 (or 1):

I also saw this one that has some decent toning, but again I am not sure if it was caused by some kind of cleaning agent:

if anyone could offer their opinions or maybe even lead my in the direction of better examples for around this price range, I'd greatly appreciate it.

For whatever reason, many of these have gotten cleaned over the years. Some look as if they had a Brillo® pad taken to them, others a buffing wheel. Others are not so bad as that, but are nevertheless impaired. If you want to absolutely avoid such, buying the type raw on ebay is probably not the way to go.

Point of reference. The first coin is not an 1896/4, it appears to be the 1896/1 Go/As RS/ML. This was a die dated 1891 from the closed Alamos mint that was shipped to Guanajuato and re-engraved as an 1896. Cool coin with a triple "over"...over date, over assayer, and over Mintmark. (Before you get too excited, it is a common coin and readily obtainable). It also appears to be cleaned so if you are looking for a nice common un-cleaned example, this would not be it. It is very possible to find an original common dated Cap and Ray 8 reales for less than $100, just need to know where to look and ebay isn't the place.

Maybe I will just continue to keep my eye out at the coin shows I go to. The only problem is that the ones I usually find are cleaned or ugly and usually higher prices than what I find on ebay. I'd prefer if I could read the entire "Libertad" on the cap as well, but I don't always have such luck at the shows. I would be willing to pony up more money than those of the E-bay listings for a nice example.

I tried ordering a couple "AU" examples from APMEX a few months ago, but when they came in, they were cleaned and I had to return them. I don't want to buy cleaned coins for that much of a premium.

I've repeatedly done so, dozens of times both at my favorite coin shops and at local shows, but in the course of the last couple years the market for these has become overheated, with the result that I've added little to my collection of late. But it's still possible, it'll just take a bit more hoofing it into the shops and asking to see if they have anything to show.

I own an 8 reales Cap and Rays myself. I'll post pictures of it in a few days once my camera is repaired.

Yes, it is definitely possible to find one that has not been cleaned for under $100. You just have to be patient and keep an eye out for one that has original surfaces.

Be careful when buying coins from APMEX. I have done so in the past, and most of them were cleaned or polished examples. Just something to be aware of.
