Nikki! You have what is referred to as a Type 1 1942 nickel. The Philadelphia mint produced both the copper-nickel and the silver alloy nickels that year. The silver alloy coins ( War Nickels) are distinguished by a large mintmark over Monticello's dome on the reverse. The absence of that means that you have a copper-nickel version, or Type 1. The value in that condition is about face.

spruett001, Just wondering if there are any known errors with the type 1 being on a type 2 planchet or vise-versa? John1

Quote: spruett001, Just wondering if there are any known errors with the type 1 being on a type 2 planchet or vise-versa? There are definitely transitional errors during this time with the incorrect planchet being used, but I can't remember exactly what combinations off the top of my head. I would guess at least War Nickels minted with CuNi planchets and 1946 nickels on silver planchets. As Numisma mentioned, though, having the same weight makes finding them much more difficult. The color may give a hint, but only XRF would be definitive, I would think. I think there is even one ('42-S or '43-D?) with the wrong (pre-war) reverse die used. Something like that would be obvious, of course.
