My wife went to a second hand store to look at things and ended up buying a handbag so she tells me this bag I bought had 70 cents in it. of course me being a coin guy and her knowing nothing about coins I asked her where she put them she says she threw them in her other handbag I immediately spot a mercury and then another ended up being a 1943 S and a 1944 P the quarters where just modern clad being the generous type I replaced her finds with 2 regular dimes

Nice!

We haven't had any scores quite like that, but have found gold/silver jewelry in purchased secondhand handbags. It's always a nice bonus.

A nice "bonus". Did you check for varieties?

My wife had something similar with a pocketbook she bought from a thrift store a couple of years ago . Searching through all the compartments after she got it home, she finds a $20 bill .

I remember an elderly family friend passing away about 20 years ago. Her son was clearing her house and gave me some coins he'd found in an old handbag of hers that was in the bottom of a wardrobe. They were just common 1960s pre-decimal British coins, but what amazed me was that there were several bronze pennies and halfpennies that were in Gem BU condition, and they had been there for at least 25 years! I remember thinking at the time that perhaps in future I should store my MS coins in old handbags to preserve their lustre!

I bought a house that was built in 1950. I was cleaning up under the basement steps and found a Lincoln Cent. It had apparently fell under there a long time ago, as it was dust covered and a bit corroded (on the "up" side). On the side facing the concrete it was AU with mint luster remaining, a 1949.

You're fortunate - my wife would have demanded full bullion value.

Great find! I always stick $20 in old wallets that I retire and put in a drawer. Years later, when I go to pitch them, I always check for money and still manage to surprise myself once in a while.
