Mutilated, probably intentionally ( PMD).

It didn't leave the mint looking like that.

No harm in asking though.

That's Post Strike Damage (Happened after it left the U.S. Mint). Worth face value.

I have an uncannily identical 1996 p mint quarter. I find it hard to believe that more than one quarter would wind up with identical post mint damages. On the photo showing the back of this coin there is a fairly flat spot on the bottom right side, 4 or 5 on a clock if you will. My quarter has a flat spot in the same location. On the from of this coin there is a blemish near the edge on the surface at the 2o'clock position and one at about the 9 o'clock position. My quarter also has similar blemishes. I am not an expert but being that two 1996p quarters exist with extremely similar damages I am left leaning toward the possibility that this is a factory error and not post damages.

If you knew the minting process, you would know that what you have is impossible to happen during the striking of the coin so the only alternative is that it is damage, no matter how it happened.
If you still think it is an error, please explain how this could happen while the coin was in the striking chamber.

Sadly, the coin has suffered a good deal of damage while in circulation. Interestingly, we've seen several badly banged-up quarters the last few weeks--very similar, but not identical to the coin posted.

I can't explain how it would happen. Can you explain how these quarters could have extremely identical damages though?

A big hammer and an anvil comes to mind. Squeeze in a vise. Slam dunk into the sidewalk. Over and over and over.

You really should have started your own thread with your own coin rather than tagging onto a thread nearly 3 years old. Perhaps a Mod will move it for you so you'll get more replies.

Regardless how similar these two quarters look, they are different. The one thing they have in common is that they are both post mint damage ( PMD). no mint errors here, no premium, sorry.
