That is part of a fin on that area. A fin is created on the coin when the die is tilted a bit. Are collar will have a space that is not closed (because of the tilt) and the metal flows between the collar and the die leaving a fin:

Because the fin is not thin, is because during circulation, transport and rolling, it gets flattened. Thus looking wider. No premium for this bu know what it is the reward. If the rim was sharp like in the picture, then it would be collectable. But not when it is flattened.

Good to know! I was ignoring these and actually did come across some with a sharp edge.

Now to find those suckers again...

Thanks Coop. I run across those really sharp edged cents a lot, all the way around. Also, any doubling on those letter?

No, just a rim & die issue. Premium for the raised thin fins. Otherwise if flattened, they are a normal coin.

You should also take a look at collar clashes.

It's gonna take a bit of time for me to find those thin fins, as I said I wasn't paying attention to that. Hopefully I still have them... somewhere?

But I did manage to have this dime I was gonna take a closer look at sitting on my desk... when I saw this post :)

So this is a collar clash?

I think yours is also a slight off center too, either that or a MAD (mid aligned die strike on both sides)but ya collar clash with some Machine Doubling and either MAD or off center

Coppergold, thanks, you just taught this old dog a new trick! I hadn't realized exactly how the collar clash would be until just now. As my wife's dear departed Grandmother would often say, "Even the most ignorant can learn!"

uhhhh.... I taught you something for real? Lol?! Or is this a sarcastic way of saying I'm wrong? I couldn't imagine me teaching something to crazyb0!! No sarcasm here, but most of the time I feel like you know most of it all lol
