I have a 1940 wheat, with what appears to be a hole going through the head and appears to be a major mint striking error. Wasn't president Lincoln shot in the head? I will post pictures if anyone is interested?also the pictures are not so good, but let me say that around the holes on both sides of the coin, is flat and smooth, no drill marks and is very apparent it came from the mint, see if something was punched or drilled. It doesn't make sense to drill a hole through something by hand
and then waist the time to flatten each side to a smooth finish, to what make a few extra dollars? Doesn't make sense to me! Not a fake or forge. The back of Lincolns head doesn't appear right? So I guess the side view of the back of his head will do, don't Ya think? Also the hole is not a straight hole, it's got square inside hole and inside rim is jagged in spots.

Welcome. Keep in mind that people will drill or punch holes in coins for various reasons all the time. For example, to wear as a pendant. So temper your expectations accordingly.

Did not come from the mint that way. It was drilled or punched from the reverse out the obverse.

Post mint damage.

Somebody took a nail and drove it through the coin using a hammer.

(BTW - Lincoln was shot in the back of the head, not the side of the head.)
Rest in Peace

As others have posted, it's just a damaged coin. Sometimes holes were punched into coins to use them as key rings or bracelet charms.

No harm in asking. Keep hunting!

Perhaps this was in Lincoln's breast coat pocket as he was shot? :)
Rest in Peace
