Can somebody please tell me if this is a major die crack on the reverse of my 1958 nickel, and also possible doubling on the date. I'm brand new so please bear with me. Thank you for your patience and your time.
Looks more like a lamination. The coin peeled or flaked under striking. Usually happens with a faulty mixture in the blank planchet. A die crack would be raised on the coin in the exact shape of the crack on the die.
What is the difference? That is probably your question. A lamination is a planchet issue. A die die crack is a die issue. A lamination will have more value than a die crack. But don't put in your notice to retire. It is a very small premium. Crack, pretty common. I would call the lamination an error. The die crack more of a die event. (not in a good way)
