Looks like MD to me. Also looks like it has some gas bubbles. Just my opinion, let the pros weigh in.

The pic gets pretty pixelated when I blow it up, but that looks more like split plating to me.

Agree, but overall the pics are too small for me to make much sense of.

On the date, I see Die Deterioration. Meaning the die is getting closer to retirement. But not yet. A few hundred thousand left to go. Probably split plating on the mint mark as you suggested.

Thanks for the memory jog, Coop.. I couldn't see it in the original photo or Spence's enlargement.. And then the words were uttered.. The 1989-D belongs to a year that includes a damaged " D " punch in the mix.. Many Ds out there absent copper at the outside SE..
