This 1940-S has die crack obv and rev. Is this considered a Cud or just a die crack on both sides?

Obverse looks like a die crack so far. The reverse looks like a slight alteration on the upper crack, just enough to call it a Retained Cud.

I was wondering if you can get better pictures of the obverse Die Crack? It looks like a Rim To Rim Die Crack, but it could be a Retained Cud, if the piece moved a little bit. The reverse could be a Retained Cud, but better pictures would help as well.

@rjh, have you looked for this on the cuds-on-coins website yet?

I think you knocked it out of the park on this one.

It appears to be RCD-1c-1940S-16 Stage B & 17R (unlisted). The Retained Cuds and mm location look right.

Cuds-on-coins has an image for RCD-1c-1940S-16 Stage A & 17R and has a separate image RCD-1c-1940S-16 Stage B that looks exactly like your obverse Retained Cud. Significantly, cuds-on-coins states for the Stage B that "The reverse die has been changed." Your coin appears to have the original reverse die.

I think you may have a transitional coin before the reverse die change that is unlisted on cuds-on-coins.

I would definitely contact JC Stevens and send him these pictures to see what he thinks.
