If the date should be read clockwise, 1581 seems like the only possibility . (I also noticed your coin is the reference for this type in Numista) Quote: Very nice trojak! Thanks! This one has an interesting story. Purchased at an auction in western Europe 20 years ago, where it was either not recognized as a rare subtype, or maybe the subtypes had not yet been cataloged(I was also not aware). Now worth far more than I paid.

indeed, great 1581 trojak ! the portrait is very good Quote: It appears William had quite a few enemies. Well, like in 1584, the 18 March 1582 attempt to murder the prince was organized and subsidized by king Philip II of Spain. In 1582 the assassin was the Spaniard Juan de Jáuregui and the attempt happened in Antwerp. The reverse of the satiric jeton of 1582 is interesting, as the attempt failed, so that Jahweh put Philip II exposed to hail and rain For 1581 I can show another piece of war propaganda expressed in a little piece of copper: jeton from Dordrecht, United Provinces, claiming that the harsh Spanish rule of the Netherlands would not be allowed by God himself The obverse shows a brutal master trying to force his dog to eat its vomit; on the reverse the master is punished by a deadly arrow from the heavens. 1581 was the year that the United Provinces of the Netherlands after three successive revolts against Spain, declared its independence as a sovereign state abjuring the titles and claims of the Habsburg throne. This declaration of independence is an act that is in several ways comparable to the more known declaration of independence of the American revolt against England. Below a low resolution photo of the original document, the so called Plakkaat van Verlatinghe that was signed on 26th of july 1581. Last year - after a public TV vote, this document was chosen as the most significant historical piece of the Netherlands. It is preserved in the National Archives of the Netherlands

During chaotic years just after the Union of Atrecht (1579) and the Union of Utrecht (1579) which divided the 17 provinces of the Netherlands in two camps, mint houses were moved, closed or opened. Again, the jetons are witnesses of these events. 1580 Dugn.2801; vLI 280 - Jeton from Antwerpen 'Flanders Mint of Lille (RIjssel) has been moved to Ghent Obverse: coat-of arms of Lille and surrounding communities CAMERAE RATIONVM GAN TRANSLATAE Reverse: tree VBERIVS TRANSLATA RECRESCIT 1580 one of my best jetons 1580 Dugn.2812, vLoonI.283.2, Tas163 - Jeton from Middelburg 'Opening of a new mint in Middelburg' Obverse: gardener planting young trees, left hat of freedom on spear SALT-EM Reverse: crowned coat-of arms of Zeeland bought on an internet auction, I did not see the hole (that was not mentioned by the seller); always better to see the coin in real life before buying

I beg forgiveness for going early due to travel tomorrow. 1579 grosz/groschen of Poland Lithuania Commonwealth from the Gdansk mint (only one more day of Batory portraits ). It is interesting that even though a smaller denomination than the trojak, the diameter is larger.

great 1579 grosz/groschen below is a so called Uniedaalder from Utrecht; this emission is unique for the year 1579 and refers to the Union of Utrecht (signed 23 January 1579) that united the Northern provinces during the third revolt against Spain. The Union of Utrecht is regarded as one of the most significant steps in the transition of a band of revolting provinces to a new independent state that became internationally recognized as such. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_of_Utrecht Obverse: Provincial coat of arms; the legend still mentions Philip II as the legal ruler: PHS*D:G HISP.REX.ORDIN TRAIEC* Reverse: Rampant lion holding sword and bundle of arrows The legend has the union phrase CONCORDIA RES PARVAE CRESCVNT this is my most curious coin as technically something went wrong during the second strike: part of the obverse die with the curls of the coat of arms and TRAI of the legend is stamped on the reverse ! How this happend is a mystery. For a better idea, see artificial gold color superposition with partial transparency of the reverse artifact on the obverse Uniedaalders ("union dollars") were only minted in three of the united provinces Utrecht, Gelderland and Groningen. Utrecht is the most common type, but still R2 (i.e. not impossible to find in auctions). Gelderland (R3 extremely difficult to find) and Groningen en Ommelanden (R4 of utmost rarity) are beyond the reach of most collectors. A superb Groningen piece was auctioned by Elsen from the famous Archer Huntington collection. http://www.coinfactswiki.com/wiki/G...der_Dav-8502

Low Countries clearly have the advantage today with that historic uniedaalder, and the very unusual coin from @spence that followed.
