Thank you in advance. Very new to the world of coin collecting. Recently inherited my wife's grandfathers coin collection and with so many coins to go through to say I'm overwhelmed is an understatement. One thing I have come across is a sealed 1964 John F Kennedy set. The nickel in this set does not look like the rest of the coins. Not the brilliance of a proof coin and not like other coins in the set. Do we have something special here or is this common for all these sets?

Thanks for your help. I do have a current Red Book to use as a reference. I have about 300 "60D", 59D and he has two rolls of pennies that has 60P that I have not opened yet. I'm having a great time learning about this new hobby of mine.
Something neat to pass down to my grandkids. Hopefully I'll be able to answer some questions they might have

Your Kennedy is 90% silver and looks nice. I agree with Onedollarbillnut, that is a blank holder your grandfather put those in.
Since you are new, get yourself a pair of cotton gloves, oil from your hands ruin coins, or only pick them up by the rims..
To me the best is to get folders to keep your coin collections in. Stay away from the 'press-in' ones, you want folders that have slides that protect the coins.
Cheaper and quite OK option is to get 2x2 cardboard flips to keep you coins in. You can still look at the coins without worry.
Welcome, a lot of great people here... Most of all, have fun.

, and also look for a doubled die obverse ( DDO) on the 1964 Kennedy half, some of these are rather pronounced.

Here is the 1964-D page, there are some for the Ps also, but not many pictures.

Since you are knew, a DDO (or DDR when on the REV) is a double image on coin devices b/c the original die had a double impression engraved on it. Some are very easy to see while others just show notches in the devices such as:Need-Advice-On-A--Kennedy-1964-Special-Strike-Set

Thanks. He must have known something because there are ALOT of penny's to go thru. It's really sad but most of the silver is dirty and worn to the point it would be at the bottom of the grading scale. There is a 1907 ten dollar gold piece that's pretty cool.
I'll check out the links. Thanks again

Remember not to clean the coins. Even some worn coins of better date and MM can be worth money. But anything that would remove surface metal (even like the very small scratches a Kleenex will make when used to wipe a coin) will take much of the value away.

If you have a question about some and making them look better, ask away with pics!
