This kind of looks like a Dryer Coin but I'm not seeing any Zinc showing. VLDS ? or is there something else going on with it ? Thank you for looking.

Very nice find and congratulations! It's a keeper as well. The good news is, it's not a Dryer Coin. It's in a Very Late Die State, with extreme Die Deterioration (die wear). It looks exactly like mine (maybe from the same die pair possibly)? My example is a little bit worse though.

Also, go to the 2nd page of my old thread, and scroll down to what it looks like after its Acetone bath. The Die Deterioration is very severe on mine as well as yours. http://goccf.com/t/322204&whichpage=2

Very VLDS coin. Even the 'L' on LIBERTY is trying to make an escape. To get you images to looking a bit sharper, you need to diffuse the light to remove the glare. Your using two lights and I'm guessing they are LED multiple lights on each of the two. What happens when you flood the image too much light and shadows disappear. Glare take over. Two lights for full images are OK, but if you used something to diffuse the light, that can reduce the glare. How expensive is a diffuser? The cost of a sheet of paper or a plastic grocery bag. Placing the diffuser between the light source and the coin, it will remove the glare. Then you will be proud of the image you post.

Keep in mind these are proof coins. Angle and double paper in front of bulb to diffuse the light.

It looks very similar to my example. Possibly from the same die pair maybe? Would this be your first example of extreme Die Deterioration that you've ever found 11997755? It's a keeper as well also.

Awesome 11997755! That's a great find! I remember finding my most extreme Die Deterioration on a 1982 P LMC 1 month ago, and it looks like yours, except it's even worse. I wonder if your coin came from the same exact die pair as mine?

I am using two lights that are single led's. I have a coffee filter directly over the light cover but this still lets too much light thru. I need to experiment with some different set-ups when I have time because the images are what it's all about when posting coins for show and tell.

The 1982 cent at the top of this thread shows severe die wear. Additionally, it's showing the beginnings of peripheral die expansion and erosion. The outermost portions of the peripheral letters are just beginning to get cut off at the design rim. See this entry for more information: http://www.error-ref.com/?s=periphe...+and+erosion

Thank you Mike for taking a look at, commenting, and providing a link on this error. Thank you everyone for your input on this one. Without your help I may have tossed in the scrap pile as a Dryer Coin.

You're very welcome and no problem! I have also found out that the U.S. Mint nearly minted 11 billion of these Large Date Cents (Mark told me in an email). This is a keeper. It will be a nice addition to your collection.
