Don't get me wrong , they are really nice looking but maybe it's because I don't care for what's printed and engraved on the reverse about it being 420 Grains 900 Fine . Never was a silver bullion collector .

I would like to own at least one. Something like the one you show would be nice. It's the history that makes it interesting.

I have a pretty nice one. I think the obverse is neat. I wouldn't turn down a second one but for me I'm glad I don't have to chase down one for my type set. Mine is at ANACS right now. I'm expecting AU58 if I'm lucky maybe.

I find the Trade dollar the most fascinating US minted coin. The only US coin demonized, recalled by US government and melted and the government would only pay the spot value that was less than the $1 face value, sent to China and chop marked, was intended for trade only but ended up in USA circulation, only a total of 5 could be used as legal tender, banks could refuse to accept Trade dollars, some businessmen scamed employees by paying employees in Trade dollars, lots of counterfeits, interesting pattern coins, low survival rate.

Design wise, it's actually one of my favorite American types...

The fineness and weight don't make them bullion but you knew that already. I prefer regular issue silver dollars as well. The Trade dollar motifs is not real appealing to my eyes.

These were not made for use in this country and actually were not legal tender hence the term " Trade dollar". When they came back into the country they normally brought less than a dollar. These were for use in the orient where silver content was important and they had to compete with silver coins of other countries.

Quote: The only US coin demonized, recalled by US government and melted and the government would only pay the spot value that was less than the $1 face value, I believe they were redeemed at face value, but they would only accept full weight non-mutilated coins which meant they would not accept chopmarked coins. The redemption period was not a very long one either. Quote: These were not made for use in this country and actually were not legal tender When they were authorized they were made legal tender to a limit of $5 in any one transaction. After silver prices fell they started flooding the marketplace (You could take silver worth 85 cents to the mint and have it made into coins worth a dollar. At the time you couldn't take silver in and have it made into other coins, that ended in 1853, but you could have it made into Trade dollars for export. But most of them were not exported after about 1875.) Finally in 1876 the repealed the legal tender status making the Trade dollar the only demonetized US coin. Legal tender status was restored by Congressional resolution in 1933 and then codified into law by the coinage act of 1965.

JBuck - Yours is a better grade than mine but it's funny how yours and mine both have almost the same wear on the bottom of the obverse rim...
