As a child I remember being fascinated by these big plaster 'coins' on the outside of the then-new Barclays Bank in my home town of Maidstone. Marcus Crouch, a local historian, describes it as "a dreadful new bank of an aggressive tastelessness" in his book on Kent, published in 1966. The building is now a bar, but I drove past it yesterday and the coins are still there!

The coins are:

1. A 1956 farthing - last year of issue!

2. A 1962 halfpenny. Probably the year the bank was opened.

3. Charles I Angel of 1625-1643

4. Charles I Unite (sovereign) of the same period.

Thanks for that writeup, Rob. It's neat that they had those plaster coins made up for the facade. I've been on the lookout for one of the farthings in the world coin bins over here.

Does the building fit in better in Kent these days?

Way cool decorations for a bar that caters to numismatists! I agree a bit dreadful for a bank.

I think so. It must have stood out much more in 1962 than today.
