Opinions and recommendation needed on gold coins. I really haven't bought that many gold coins and do not know too much about it. I once had couple of raw St. Gauden double eagles in late 90's but sold them many years ago. Now that I tentatively completed 7070 US type set album (link below if you want to see it), I'm thinking about the optional gold page. For these gold coins, are there good quality raw gold coins? Or are most of non-problem coins slabbed? Dansco 7070 album http://goccf.com/t/325884

Slabbed without question. Raw gold type set when you don't deal in gold is just asking for trouble.

Just have fun . There are a lot of known fake, more so on the small gold coins.

Quote: Have you found a gold page for sale ? Dansco makes a separate add-on gold coin page for the 7070 album you can buy and add to the album. Edit: GR58 posted his while I was typing this.

Quote: Just have fun . I'd personally be a little more diligent than having fun on a page whose melt value is around 5k.

Gold? An ambitious endeavor for sure. That's way beyond my reach. Quote: For these gold coins, are there good quality raw gold coins? Yes. Quote:Or are most of non-problem coins slabbed? Not necessarily. There are many problem coins in slabs.....cleaned, corroded, details, environmental damage, etc.. Bottom-line for me; you gotta be a numismatist (which I'm not) to identify a raw/problem free coin. Dealing with gold, I could easily buy a fake and not know it. Slabbed all the way! Good luck with the hunt. Keep us posted on your progression.

Unless you are knowledgeable and experienced enough to differentiate fake/real, I would stick to authenticated coins, problem-free or not (your decision). If they are going into the page, then safe slab-cracking techniques must be considered. Quote: I'd personally be a little more diligent than having fun on a page whose melt value is around 5k. That's pretty much what I was thinking. It can be fun, but being careful may be a higher priority with this page.

Most people with 5k to throw away usually will be going for more expensive coins. The gold page is literally the most counterfeited US coins some of which were made by a foreign government in gold

Quote: I'd personally be a little more diligent than having fun on a page whose melt value is around 5k. Me personally .... buying gold coins is fun. Raw gold coins can be bought very close to melt. If your buying from a good dealer, he should have the right test equipment to test the gold purity and weight. Then there are guides to help you check for known fakes. If you worried, then make a agreement that you want to send the coin to ANACS to have it authenticated. On the higher priced gold, buy slabbed, then break them out for your album. If you are buying gold coins at close to melt. And the coin has been check to insure that it really is gold. That takes away the chance of having a big loss. Why not have fun with putting together the most expensive page most collectors will put together.

Quote: Me personally .... buying gold coins is fun. Complete minefield but if that's what you like it's your choice. Quote: If your buying from a good dealer, he should have the right test equipment to test the gold purity and weight. The good fakes beat that every time. Quote: If you worried, then make a agreement that you want to send the coin to ANACS to have it authenticated. Out of the four recognized TPGs, they would be my last choice by far. Quote: Why not have fun with putting together the most expensive page most collectors will put together. Collecting should always be fun, but fun can be different than being smart and the gold page requires being smart first which should be a joy in itself.

Thank you everybody.. I will certainly need to catch up on gold coin studies, if that's even possible. I'm not putting 5K-7K anytime soon, and this will be multi-year looking, learning, asking, & eventually buying, if I decided to have one. But looking at GR58's gold page sure make things difficult NOT to have one

Baseball21 I have seen you do this on other threads, you seem to not like other members opinions.
Do you really think your opinion is the only one that is right?
I am not going to play that game, I will not respond to you again.
When I was working at a coin shop, we bought hundreds of gold coins over many years. Some we knew we fake when we bought them, and took them off to be melted. Of the ones that were sent off to be authenticated one maybe two came back fake.

This maybe a good time to build your gold page, price of gold is down, so take advantage if it continues before price goes back up? Unless dealers jack up the premium to offset the lost they already incurred.

I think for most, it is a many year process. I am hoping to start my second gold page for my Intercept shield type set I am pretty sure that will be a 4 or 5 year process. I like to wait for the better deals to come along. The 7070 is a very nice set to have in your collection, having the gold page really tops it off.
