Good Day to All,

I recently come across this 1949 Half Penny that appears to have multiple errors and would love to find out more. I completely understand there is a good chance this is a result of PMD, however more knowledgeable insight than mine is needed.

The coin is in bad condition, it appears to have been properly struck and then re-struck leaving a mirror image on the same side of the coin. The word AUSTRALIA, the date 1949 and the kangaroo are all slightly offset imprinted back to front on the same side as the original strike.

@Tomuel, first welcome to CCF. Second, while Australian coins are not my thing, I do note that in the US backwards and incuse letters are most often the result of a "vice" job, where one coin is sandwiched in between two others and then compressed in a vice. Certainly, other folks will weigh in on your specific coin, but I'd keep this possibility of this all just being intentional damage in the back of your mind.

Thanks for the input, it is from my Mothers collection and she wanted me to check it out. I believed it was what you refer to as a vise job, just had to check to make sure. She has quite a few different pieces she wants me to find out for her so if I come across anything unique I will post on here. Thanks for the welcome guys

To CCF! Just a heavily damaged coin. It's Post Strike Damage (meaning it happened after it left the Mint).
