I picked up a bag a Mercury dimes there was this 1944 which stuck out from the rest. I am wondering if it would be worth sending in for grading. I am guessing PR-63 to PR-66 with FB

This looks like a scan, not a photo ? A scanner will not show luster well.

I did look up what a proof is before I came here. Yes it is a scan doesn't show very good. That is why I asked. Maybe a photo would show better.

AU-58, possibly cleaned. No mirror finish so not a proof.

Better photos would help. Highly doubt it's a proof.

Quote: I did look up what a proof is before I came here. Not sure what your level of coin collecting is .. The number one reason your coin is not proof. The mint did not make proof coins in 1944. In most if not all years prior to 1965 proof coins were made at the Mother mint, Philadelphia, not the branch mints. Pre 1965, not all years had proof coins. There will be areas to check out on proof coins, like the rims are squared, not rounded. For me the best way to learn about proof coins, is to acquire some and compare them to regular business strike coins. I am trying to help .. not be negative

There is wear on the coin so it cannot be anything better than an AU. It is also not FSB.

moose59- Do you not ever make use of the sidebar? There is a wealth of information there. You could have saved these two posts on Mercury dimes by looking under US Coin Facts and seen that there are no proofs issued in those two years. It's always better to do your own research first and then if you can't figure it out, then by all means ask a question.

I looked in the Red Book. No proofs were struck in 1944. And from the images I don't see FSB either.
