Oh, Thanks Crazyb0! I was under impression that there were 4-5 different MMs for 1945 Mercury dime. ...mini, nob, trumpet, inverted, and s over vertical s. Is that correct?

Cleaning = removing metal = ruins coin. I have been able to get the gunk away from many mint marks like this using a porcupine quill. The quill is soft enough not to scratch the coin. Some people use a toothpick, but compared to the porcy-quill, the toothpick is like trying to manipulate a log to get the gunk. Most quill ends can fit inside the loops of a D or S. Note they vary in size and diameter. Where to get porcy quills if you don't see them as road kill locally? Here is the best price on ebay. https://www.ebay.com/itm/american-p...AOSwq7JUFeD0Just one lasts for a lot of coins since the quills are tough. I have been using the same batch of 50 now for years. Oh - the only time I have scratched a coin is when I pushed the gunk around and there was something in the gunk that could scratch. Same happens with a toothpick.

Thanks for the info on the quills. Crazyb0, Thanks for the link. I read the info on the different 45 S MM's on this thread post from macmercury. http://goccf.com/t/69383

There is a Inverted S for 45, but since it isn't rare and popular among most Mercury dimes collector, so is the price. The real tough one to find is the S over horizontal S.

Knob Tail "S"
Three mintmark styles are found for 1945-S dimes. The Knob-Tail S used for the majority of 1944-S dimes is also the most common this year. The Trumpet-Tail S used previously in 1941-43 is the rarest of the three.
