Got this one recently, it looks really beat up at first glance but the places that were struck are mint. It must have been a gnarled piece of stock!

that is all post strike damage - I guarantee you it didnt leave the mint looking like that. either a parking lot coin, or little jimmy did that in the garage.

It's actually a legitimate error coin. See the weakness on both sides? That's because the Planchet split, and there wasn't enough material to fill in the strike. http://www.error-ref.com/split_plan_before/

Mrzllewellyn, looking at it closely that piece in the middle of the head seems to have been folded over and struck that way with some debris under it causing that black area you see. Who's to say it didn't happen after the strike though. Split planchettes occur because of this debris in the middle of the planchette, this one being uncirculated still has some of that present. Only on the obverse where the split occurred.

Obverse indicates (pre-strike) split planchet side. Weak reverse and some circulation seems present as well. Thanks, Doug.

Weight? That might tell all we need to know? Just spotted it. Looks like as mentioned a thinned or split off planchet issue

Stoneman, the funny thing, is Will's and your example are only one year apart from each other.

Even more E&V , Will's weights in at 1.59 g and mine is 1.60 ! All you have to do is add a 9 after the 1's in each weight and you have the date of each coin.
