Hi All, My husband just brought this $500.00 bill out to show me..(since ive been obsessed with looking at coins) He wanted me to ask you experts if this is something he should hang onto, and if not would it be worth more than $500.00? Thanks Edited by Rabbithole1 09/16/2018 8:40 pm

It's history. Can you imagine who would have had this bill in that year.

I am no expert, just interested, but I do believe the note is worth moderately more than face value. Here is a very similar (if not worse condition) graded note that sold for a couple hundred over face: 362358574948Can you post full pics of both sides?

Even in beat-up condition, I'd say any $500 or $1000 notes are worth holding onto as they will carry some premium over face value. Some folks here in Korea have been lucky enough to locate them in banks, as some people will just cash them in unaware of the numismatic value.

Virtually all high denomination ($500 $1,000) notes have value above face. How much, ultimately depends upon condition. I would get it into a Mylar currency sleeve to help protect it against further damage.

Good advice. Condition isn't the best, but it's a real conversation piece! to the Paper Money Forum!

In terms of funding a retirement, I'm not sure this will keep up with inflation. Keep it as a "cool story".

Immediately place that note into a polyethelene holder for archival storage. Don't take it with you to the store you buy the holder from, leave it alone until you take care of it.

From the photo shown, it looks like an $850 note.

I would agree with coinlover that that could be an $800-$850 note in that condition (VG-F) (from what we can see).

Agreed $800-850 is about right. Maybe a bit more on a good day.

Thank you ALL for your advice! I went down to the coin shop and they gave me a sleeve to put it in:) That is why the picture of the back has a reflection.

How can you go wrong with a genuine $500 note? Very cool.
