There are certainly perfectly innocent questions that come up by new members that I'm sure are legitimate. I have no proof but I seriously suspect that there is an aweful lot of 1 post new members that are just playing games.
Stupid obvious stuff for example, something like ... "I found a coin that is round and has a rim on it."
Some of these questions raise a flag to me that if the person were genuinely interested in coins or varieties and errors, they would have long before posting here, become more interested in coins or come to a simple conclusion by looking at the other coins in their pocket.
The fact that they search out CCF and post about an ordinary coin being special is exceedingly farfetched for being a real question.
This has spiked lately, I'd say more in the past month than ever before. A hundred doubled die questions or post mint damaged coins can be somewhat tolerable but asking what kind of error circulation wear is, is driving me nuts.
Not so much that they ask, but that the kind and helpful members we have actually take the time to answer them. I plain ignore most all of these posts, sometimes a vague title gets me to look and then I go bang my head on the wall.
I wonder if there is somebody out there or a few that keep making new registrations on CCF and stays up late to dream up such nonsense.
Anyway, my rant is that these are cluttering up way too much of the new posts we see and for the good of CCF, I think the really dumb and obvious ones should just be ignored or even deleted. I could point out a few in a hurry, but I know that isn't appropriate. So it's just my opinion, these posts do not add to the integrity of our educational forum and they are trashing the quality of what people will find here when wanting to learn about coins.
Thank you for taking (the time) <- edit to read my post. Edited by TNG 10/04/2018 3:26 pm

I have noticed that also. Have you also noticed that most of those are from females? Why do you suppose that is? John1

To be completely honest, that is exactly what burned me out on frequenting the errors & varieties forum. News sites like to post sensational articles, which, if they involve coins, will detail some error or rarity that was bought/found cheap and sold for $1,000 or more. People damage coins and then spend them. People find them and start dreaming of raking in the dough; buying a new pair of shoes, a TV, a car, or a private island in the Caribbean with the coin they found in their change. I can only type "It's just Rolling Machine Damage" so many times before I stop caring to respond.

Mike, of course I have noticed... I think some of the mods have to to have axed some of my responses to these one-hit wonders. And yes, there does seem to be an influx of new female members that eerily seem to ask similar questions in similar(not identical) style..
And I too have stopped basically for this reason, you put your finger right on it, hadn't though of a Scammer.
Bobby, hope you know there are ways to spoof your IPN, not sure exactly how, but from a family IT friend heard it is possible. So it could be possible someone is running multiple accounts..

I have to agree that a lot of Newbies both male and female are totally clueless to the hobby let alone the basics of Numismatics . I to have been getting a little annoyed at some of the immature and childish questions . All we can do is either ignore them or try and be as noncritical as possible in answering their posts . Which hasn't been very easy .

One thing I have started doing is locking topics when new members refuse to believe what they're being told. Especially when it's something we've seen thousands of times, like Dryer Coins, super glue, etc.... They always seem think the 45th picture they upload will change 50 minds. I lock them before they get piled on with a note to use the contact form after they get it certified to upload pics of the slab.

I do appreciate that you are on top of this Bobby. It's our site and I think keeping things a little tighter will present a better image to search engines and results and to those who will come here in the future. No need for a chorus here, I am glad though that I'm not the only one that sees this. I certainly don't want this to rise to the top of recent posts and take up space for other numismatic information. Thanks again, I said my piece. If this was locked, that would be fine with me too.

Most of you guys have been here much longer then I. I'm thinking this type of thing has pushed a lot of good member away over the years.

Another thing I've done in the last couple years or so... honestly not sure if it's right or wrong, I feel bad every time I do it, but I still do it.....
If it becomes obvious a new member is posting every single pocket change coin they get over 10 years old (or any coin with the slightest nick or discoloration) and asking "Any value?" or any of the thousand different questions that all mean the same thing.. (Is this an error? Is this a doubled die? etc...)... I lock the account, remove their topics, and delete all the images.
Like I said, not sure if it's right or wrong... but I grudgingly do it.

Personally, I try to respond to topics created by members who are legitimately looking to learn and ask questions...and not members who post 100 different Lincoln memorial cents from the 1990s asking if they're a "double die" or worth big money. Some newer members will just post a thousand different normal coins from pocket change and ask questions over and over about them - and they won't be convinced that it is PMD or Machine Doubling or not an error. Personally, I think what you are doing is right.

When the basic forum premise is Education, not a show-and-tell forum, then there has to be some limit to ridiculousness. Some posts I've seen are definitely by Junior on his cell phone for the first time at 9 years old. When adults act like this it is obnoxious!
I have spent much detailed time and effort on some posters, only to have them argue or counterpoint with comments not appropriate. Those gotta go, I have a hard time with that. I've spent hours, both on threads and in emails helping folks to see a simple concept of a doubled die, that's the point. Does the individual really want to LEARN the answer. All you have to do is a quick check on all those one-hit-wonders, that get the answer and become water vapor.

I think that we have to be careful and not turn away a real novice who asks an honest question. At least give people a chance (but not 100 chances). But, as @bobby131313 notes, if it gets to be a trend and the posters are not "getting it", I think it is OK to do something.
Lets face it, anything open to the general public can get get all sorts of "strange" people (coin collectors are strange enough), and tolerance does have its limits.
