Hi all, This is my very first post in a forum of any kind so I hope I'm in the right area. What I need to know is, if the Australian 2012 $2 red poppy coin was released as an uncarded circulating coin. The RAM has it listed as a circulating coin but then elsewhere I can only see it was a special release only on a card. Anyone know ? thnx

I don't believe it was a circulating coin - the second link coaster posted says the coloured version was "distributed through the RSL Red Poppy Appeal" (though I think the RSL was provided with rolls which they then cracked and put the coins on the cards - I vaguely recall rolls for sale on ebay).

Yeah, the RSL were given absolutely no instructions about how best to attach the coins to the card. Some were glued, others used sticky tape. It was a bit of a nightmare. Even although the RAM has them listed as circulation coins, I don't think it was ever intended for them to go into circulation, especially with only 500,000 of them minted.

From what I gather, it seems that the RSL around the country had just a few days to sell them. What are the odds that while there was serious attempts to fundraise for donation, what could not be sold were released into circulation.
Couldn't imagine the RSL selling all half million of them...

I don't think they had just a few days - I remember buying carded issues from RSL fundraisers in 2013 as well. But 500,000 coins is a lot of coins to stick on cards and the fact you can still get rolls means that plenty probably didn't fulfill their original purpose. I assume the entire 500,000 was given to the RSL but possibly the 2013 annual report could shed some light on the matter.

A previous post mentioned rolls being cracked open for change in the till at work so yes, albeit unintentionally, some coins ended up in circulation at face value. As others have suggested, likely excess coins that weren't carded at the time.

Was the 2012 red poppy intended to be the original "donation dollar"?
No. I think that comment was made in reference to any coins still in circulation reminding people of remembrance day. The donation was made at the time of purchase with no real intention that there would be many coins left to enter circulation which is pretty much what happened.

As far as the RAM is concerned the non-mintmarked 2012 red poppy coin is a Quote: circulating coloured coin distributed through the RSL The version with a C mint mark is NCLT.
