Looking at some coins with indents and find that I don't know what is supposed to be on a regular indent vs one with more going on. So here is a coin where I see three possible things, which all just might be that which occurs on most all indents, or something more. Please help me understand what I am seeing. Thanks. 1. The coin has an indent and I see no brockage or signs of a double strike. In this case I assume an unstruck blank or planchet got in the way during the strike creating an indent on one side and little on the other. 2. The rim is wide and soft near the indent on both sides like a broadstrike, but is it a broadstrike or just an effect of the indent. 3. Nearly opposite the indent, occurring on the edge from STATES to AMERICA, is what looks like a partial collar. Again, is this an effect of the indent, an effect of an additional broadstrike, or a partial collar as well as an indent. The edge photo is taken with the obverse facing down and looking almost straight at STATES. Thanks for all the help with my trying to understand error coins!

@tb, thanks for posting this. It is well beyond my modest understanding of errors. I'm interested to see what others think about this one.

Awesome purchase tropicalbats! I contacted Mike Diamond again, so you can hear what he has to say about it.

I'm thinking the second planchet creating the indent hampered the coins ability to take up a proper strike position or hindered the collar deployment. Thus adding a partial collar to one side and broadstrike appearance seen on obverse. Thanks, Doug.

This is a broadstrike with an indent (impression of an unstruck planchet). The thin vertical flange on the reverse opposite the indent represents a little bit of collar contact. Here the impact of the hammer die was felt first, and the collar didn't collapse completely out of the way until later in the downstroke.

with Mike, on just first glance it looks certainly like a broadstrike with an indent, and a very nice piece!
