Hello again everyone. I struck out with a quarter yesterday, but was wondering if anyone can shed some light on a penny of mine. I'm not an expert on errors, but this sure as heck looks like something is off on this penny. On the front side, the liberty, date, and mint Mark look to have double letters behind them. On the back side, it is less pronounced, but you see the same thing (especially in the letter "o" in one). Thoughts? Thank-you to everyone in advance.

Looks like Machine Doubling. It has a shelf like appearance, as a true doubled die would be raised on the devices. Zinc is bleeding through on the reverse/top lettering. It's a spender.

Your coin is showing Die Deterioration. These show on the fields of the coin on the devices in the direction of the closest rim. Just showing that the die is showing it's age. Not a doubled die.

This is called Die Deterioration Doubling. It's caused by a worn die issue, from striking a ton of planchets at the U.S. Mint. http://www.error-ref.com/die-deteri...on-doubling/

I think I might be learning from this. --So is the gritty/rippled look of the field near the rims (especially around the doubled letters/numbers) a pretty sure sign that it's a DDD? I ask because I just got a 2016 D dime with that going on, and a bunch of people on Youtube have it too. But I see that rippling and it reminds me of my Shenandoah quarter that broke my heart.

Yep, that's correct. Although, be careful using YouTube, as the information is not always correct on there. Use these resources instead. http://www.doubleddie.com http://www.coppercoins.com http://www.varietyvista.com http://www.error-ref.com

Thank you. But by "a bunch of people on Youtube" I actually meant a newbie like me who uploaded a video, and several other newbies replying to that, ha. It was clearly amateurville. I'm such a pro now. (NOT).
