My-Recent-Find:-1969-War-Nickel!-How?

I'm in need of some knowledgeable help, I'm lost for words here. last night I unrolled a half tarnished 1969. I set it aside to later check to see it has a worn down S above the monticello ... what did I just find?

Unfortunately, I believe that is just damage, not a mintmark.

To CCF , this is not a War Nickel , there is no S above Monticello . There is a D mint mark on obverse right under the date . What you have is environment color change on the obverse .

to the CCF! The area above the Memorial had taken a hit giving the false impression of an S mintmark. The D on the obverse shows it was minted in Denver. That would be great if it had that type of reverse, unfortunately it is a nickel worth five cents.

As previous members have said, it is damage, not a S.
It's not even in the right location besides being impossible.
Please listen to the answer from those who know when you ask a question.

In 1969 there were no silver coins being struck. So it makes it hard to be silver then.

i read the responses, I'm sick of negative people,,i only post what my this is what my eyes can see,, I have several finds of transisional unknown coins and they all get stated as fake!,, well thats , I'm sick of hearing it if coins didn't cost so much to check a coin,i would just skip this step of gaining other people so called "knowledge" of negativity I keep receiving,, I understand coins are a tough gig to understand but to be honest its as real as the dam picture shows! IT looks, smells, tastes even clinks like a coin a silver one that is,:) that is clearly a S mint mark, yes its ofset, how did it get there? the coin is tarnished as silver would do, but only on one side, why? these are the answers I'm looking for.. if you have nothing good to say then get off my post, thanks

I am sorry you do not want to accept it. We are here to teach. Sometimes what you hear is not what you wanted to hear. That is a part of learning.

That being said, this coin is not silver, it is environmental damage. That is not a mint mark, it is Pareidolia.

Weight? Not seeing any foreign coinage with a silver composition being struck at the Denver mint.

Do see Denver produced foreign coinage in other compositions.

Curious if you can smell and taste it again, can you detect any Zinc? Thanks, Doug.

Pieper, you're mistaking the responses as being negative. They're not negative, they're educated. The people who responded to you have multiple thousands of hours of experience between them, some of which can very easily be classified as experts. And they all unanimously agree that it's just damage. your coin and coins similar to yours very easily fool beginners, so detecting damage such as this becomes easy because you see it so often. When you gain a deeper understanding of the minting process, you will understand how something like this is indicative of being altered, and not due to a mint error.

I really don't know what to say, you have a damaged and slightly off grey toned nickel, that is what you found. If you're just just going to take anything aside from "you have found a million dollar coin". As an insult, then why even come on a forum and ask for others input? Keep looking and you will almost 100% find something of value. But if you're going to get offended just because this coin isn't an error/or worth lots of money, than maybe you might wanna re check why you coin roll hunt.

Our community is open to help new collectors with there questions and sharing knowledge, and if you're willing to accept it then I think you will find this forum to be of great enjoyment as well as this hobby.

If you have a War Nickel you could try the tissue test?
