I can see 19(8?)3 as the date from these pics. It could be a dropped letter

I see 983, after the one. What I doubt is real is the GD mintmark. It appears to me to be a Lincoln Cent, You can see the lapel very faintly. Dan |

Maybe those are mint marks at the bottom there? They look to be the right shape and size for '80s pennies....  -CH27 Collector of U.S. Coins, Varieties, and Colonial Coinage

It is difficult to tell from the one pic if the additional D is incuse or not. If it were a dropped letter, it should be. With the filled date and the strong MM, it makes sense to me. Certainly could be a grease filled date and a dropped mintmark which fell out upside over.
Very neat find.
